#158 The Carson Wentz Injury Fallout Is Messy

Posted on

First it was Cam Akers. Then it was Michael Thomas. And now it is Carson Wentz, who is out indefinitely after suffering a foot injury at the end of last Thursday’s practice.

Ian Rapoport reported that Wentz plans to rest and rehab his foot over the next few days as opposed to having immediate surgery. In that scenario, a return by Week 1 would be in play, but if he doesn’t improve then surgery will be needed.

Dr. Jene Bramel from Footballguys is still waiting to get the specific diagnosis on the injury, but said it’s “safe to project Wentz will struggle with mobility and will be at risk of setbacks as he works through the injury.”

In response to the injury, the Colts signed Brett Hundley. 2nd year QB Jacob Eason is the other option for the team at QB:

Losing Wentz is a blow to the entire offense. Most Colts pieces were pretty affordable to begin with, but we probably need to pump the brakes on Jonathan Taylor and Michael Pittman at their pre-Wentz injury ADPs. I’ll keep taking stabs on Parris Campbell and Nyheim Hines late in drafts.

📰 Fantasy News for the true sickos.

* The Saints signed free agent RB Devonta Freeman to a one-year deal. Hard to know exactly what triggered this signing, but likely a depth move behind Alvin Kamara and 31-year-old Latavius Murray as the team shifts to a more run-focused offense without Michael Thomas

* Dolphins Coach Brian Flores considers Will Fuller "day-to-day" with a foot injury and hopes to have him back at practice "as quick as possible” according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

* Last week we laughed at the notion that there was no QB competition in San Francisco and Matt Barrows from The Athletic recently confirmed our suspicions that Trey Lance is bearing down on Jimmy Garoppolo: “Still, the notion that Lance could overtake Garoppolo early in the season, which seemed so far fetched on draft day and after OTAs, appears far more realistic today.”

* Sammy Watkins is having an impressive training camp per Jeff Zrebiec: “The veteran free-agent signing has started camp in good form. He looks fresh, explosive, motivated and more importantly, healthy. He’s consistently gotten open and made plays all over the field.”

* Adam Caplan on Eagles rookie RB Kenny Gainwell: “I'm going to make a small prediction: look for rookie Gainwell to be the Eagles version of Nyheim Hines. It seemed that Hines ran more pass routes than he had carries in the two days I attended practice. And we know that Sirianni coached Hines for 3 seasons with the Colts when he was their OC.”

* Rondale Moore turning heads at camp according to Darren Urban: “It's early, yes, I know, but it sure looks like Moore is going to be a player. He hasn't been perfect but he shows up again and again.” Peter Schrager said similar things about the veteran A.J. Green: “(He) looks incredible out there.”

* Like clockwork every August there’s some positive buzz about Matt Breida. Do with this report from Sal Capaccio what you will: “Breida has really shown off his speed and quickness through the first four days. He could wind up being more of a factor in the offense than many anticipated when they signed him as a free agent in March.”

* Kevin Knight reported that Qadree Ollison was getting work entirely with the first team and is likely the early favorite for RB2. This is a fragile backfield with 28-year-old Mike Davis at the top, so we will continue to pay attention to these blurbs.

* It doesn’t always translate to fantasy, but Nick Chubb is probably the best pure runner in the NFL and now he’s getting paid like it after signing a 3-year contract extension worth $36.6 million with the Browns.

* Vikings WR Bisi Johnson was diagnosed with a torn ACL on Saturday. Dede Westbrook should be the WR3 there.

* I still much prefer Javonte Williams, but Benjamin Allbright says not so fast: “One thing that's being glossed over I think in the shadow of some of the position battles here at Broncos Camp is that Melvin Gordon is clearly the RB1 for this team so far.”
