#159 Are We Sleeping On Travis Etienne??

Posted on

It would appear that HBO chose the wrong NFC East team for Hard Knocks this year:

Nothing like a good training camp brawl to unite the team and instill confidence in fantasy drafters. Vegas currently has the Giants win total set at 7 if you’re looking to bet against the dysfunction.

📰 Fantasy News for the true sickos.

* Philip Rivers is ready to do his best Brett Favre impression and said he would not rule out returning to the NFL in December or January. You have to love Rivers’ confidence that he could coach high school football all Fall and then waltz into NFL action as the playoffs are starting.

* John Shipley on the Jaguars No. 25 overall pick: "Few players were as active catching the ball on Monday as running back Travis Etienne. The Jaguars clearly have big plans for the running back position...but the usage of Etienne as a pass-catcher has been evident throughout the first week of camp."

* The Saints might have a spot open as their No. 3 back since Ty Montgomery has played primarily at wide receiver during training camp,” said Larry Holder in The Athletic. This nugget explains the team’s recent Devonta Freeman signing.

* Cowboys TE is one of the more interesting camp battles and it sounds like Dalton Schultz might hold onto the job after stepping in for Blake Jarwin last year: “Schultz has picked up right where he left off last year. He has received the bulk of the first-team reps as Jarwin has slowly been brought back from his season-ending knee injury.”

* Another camp battle I’m closely monitoring is the Chiefs WRs behind Tyreek Hill. Mecole Hardman sounds like he’s locked up the No. 2, but Byron Pringle appears to have an early lead over Demarcus Robinson and Cornell Powell, per Nate Taylor of The Athletic.

* Based on the ADP, the fantasy market suspects D’Andre Swift will be in a bit of a timeshare with Jamaal Williams, but if Albert Breer is correct then Swift should be going in the same range as Antonio Gibson and Clyde Edwards-Helaire: “Swift's going to be the bellcow, and having Williams around has really helped the former second-rounder take another step forward.”

* Trey Lance got his first rep with the starters in team drills yesterday.

🚑 The Injury Ward

* When it rains, it pours. The Colts star guard Quenton Nelson has the same foot injury as Carson Wentz and is expected to be out 5-12 weeks after having surgery.

* Speaking of Wentz, he had his surgery on Monday and there were no complications. He’ll be back by early October if everything goes to plan during rehab.

* Matthew Stafford slammed his surgically repaired right thumb into a defender’s helmet at camp on Monday and ended his day early. It sounds minor for now, but worth keeping tabs on.

* Giants WR Kenny Golladay is dealing with a hamstring injury, though it isn’t considered significant. He underwent tests yesterday. We’ll keep you posted.

* Christian Kirk is expected to miss a few practices, though we don’t know why. There’s lots of competition in Arizona behind DeAndre Hopkins for targets, especially with both the rookie Rondale Moore and the veteran A.J. Green reportedly looking great in camp so far.

* Bears coach Matt Nagy says Tarik Cohen—who is on the PUP list—is “weeks away” from returning. As we’ve mentioned previously, Damien Williams is a priority RB target late in drafts.

* Dolphins backup RB Salvon Ahmed was wearing a non-contact jersey at practice. It’s believed to be just a bruise, but this is worth monitoring as Ahmed is battling with Malcolm Brown for the No. 2 spot in Miami.
