#20 Are The Trendy RBs On Waivers A Trap? 🤔

Posted on

The more I think about the waiver wire options this week, the more I feel like the running backs might be a trap and the tight ends are the real prizes with staying power.

Devonta Freeman signing with the Giants muddles that backfield. Raheem Mostert isn’t expected to miss a ton of time and we know how much Kyle Shannahan likes to employ committees. And Mike Davis should have a nice floor in PPR leagues, but the Panthers are currently one of the worst teams in football and Curtis Samuel is lurking.

On the flip side of the coin, tight ends like Dalton Schultz (10 targets, 88 yards & 1 TD) and Drew Sample (7 receptions for 45 yards) are stepping into permanent roles with Blake Jarwin and C.J. Uzomah done for the year. Not to mention, Mo Alie-Cox (111 yards) has the athletic profile to put up big numbers as long as Jack Doyle is out.

Running backs are always going to be the more valuable commodity on waivers, but unless you need immediate production I think it’s worth being price-sensitive this week while sneaking these tight ends on your roster. There’s still plenty of waiver wire chaos to come. This is your time, now go out there and take it...

Everything Else You Need To Know

Blake Bortles has agreed to a one-year contract with the Broncos. Jeff Driskel vs. Bortles is the QB controversy we all deserve...Speaking of controversies, Justin Herbert vs. Tyrod Taylor is one to watch. Anthony Lynn insists that Taylor is still the starter if healthy but I don’t see how you put the toothpaste back in the tube...Raheem Mostert isn’t expected to play Sunday, but the team is optimistic he’ll avoid a long absence. Wheels up on The Jet for Week 3...Diontae Johnson is dealing with a lingering toe injury. Johnson has more receptions, targets, and yards than JuJu Smith-Schuster through two games...DeVante Parker (hamstring) was limited in practice on Tuesday. Something to monitor on their short week before Thursday’s game...Same story for D.J. Chark (chest) who was also limited in practice Tuesday...It’s unclear whether Davante Adams will play in Week 3 after suffering a hamstring injury…The Chiefs trying out running backs would seem to indicate that Darrel Williams isn’t fully healthy.

Dig Deeper Than Your Leaguemates

I think Pat Kerrane is one of the best fantasy analysts out there that not everyone knows about. Here’s 90 minutes of Pat breaking down the most important stats from Week 2 (Video / Audio).

Similarly, I love this new weekly column from Rotoviz’s Jack Miller, who I think is literally still in college, called Strength In Numbers. The Joe Mixon & Gio Bernard nuggets are interesting.

If you’ve ever wondered why all the quants in football preach going for 2 when down 9, this explainer by Brian Burke is very helpful.
