For a few hours on Saturday night it seemed possible that yesterday’s slate could come crashing down underneath the weight of multiple positive COVID cases, but fortunately we were all able to enjoy a full Sunday’s worth of entertaining games. Here’s everything that caught my eye yesterday...
George Kittle wasted no time getting back to speed as he dropped 183 yards and 1 TD on 15 targets while repeatedly bullying Eagles defenders after the catch. He sits atop my personal GROWN ASS MAN rankings with D.K. Metcalf (2nd straight 100-yard game). He also, unbelievably, is now the TE6 in PPR scoring after just two games played.
Austin Ekeler is slated to miss multiple weeks due to the hamstring injury and hyperextended knee. He was spotted postgame with crutches and a brace. Rookie Joshua Kelley and veteran Justin Jackson will try to fill his shoes in the meantime. We discussed both Kelley, Jackson, and other potential waiver adds on this morning’s episode of Splash Play.
Nick Chubb will undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the knee injury he suffered in Sunday’s 49-38 win over the Cowboys. Kareem Hunt looked ridiculously good in his absence while rushing for 71 yards and 2 TDs. The Browns have the most talented backfield in the league.
Robby Anderson is quickly becoming one of my favorite players. He caught 8 of 11 targets for 99 yards vs. the Cardinals, but more importantly, looked hilariously lost while the rest of the team sang “Sweet Caroline” in the locker room after the game.
Kenyan Drake, who continues to disappoint in the box score, left the game in the 4th quarter with a chest injury and didn’t return. He’s getting the carries, but the lack of involvement in the passing game (no targets) gives him the scary floor we’ve now seen multiple weeks.
No need to ask Dak Prescott to cook. He cooks every week no matter what. He threw 58 times on Sunday for 502 yards and 4 TDs. The Cowboys are a frustrating “real life” team but, hot damn, they are fun for fantasy.
Justin Herbert might just be the real deal. He threw for 291 yards and 3 TDs in a close loss to the Buccaneers yesterday. Check out this dime off his back foot. Whew. Speaking of dimes, how about Jarvis Landry with one on a rope to Odell.
Lamar Jackson ripped off a 53 yard rushing TD vs. Washington. He’s clearly been studying Sam Darnold tape. Mark Andrews bounced back in a big way after a couple quiet games. Via Matthew: Andrews now has multiple TD catches in 3 of his past 5 games. No other TE has 3 such games since Week 11 of 2018.
After a slow start to the season DJ Chark returned in a massive way for the Jags on Sunday, catching 8 of 9 targets for 95 yards and 2 TDs. There’s room for both Chark and Laviska Shenault to feast in this offense. By the way, happy birthday Viska. How do I know it’s his birthday? I guess you could say I’m a fan.
Dalvin Cook (146 total yards and 2 TDs) and Joe Mixon (181 total yards and 2 TDs) were your standout running backs on the day.
It’s only a matter of time until we start talking about Stefon Diggs in the same breath as DeAndre Hopkins and Michael Thomas. He’s an insane talent.
Tonight we get a MNF doubleheader with the Patriots-Chiefs at 7:05 ET & Falcons-Packers at 8:50 ET. The Patriots overnight test results all came back negative this morning and the team is en route to the airport as I type this. There are no certainties in this landscape, but so far so good. Both Davante Adams and Sony Michel has been downgraded to out tonight, by the way.
The Titans had 18 positive tests over the past six days but zero today, which provides some hope that they will be able to play the Bills in Week 5...O.J. Howard ruptured his Achilles and will miss the rest of the season...Chris Godwin is unlikely to play Thursday vs. the Bears...Allen Lazard is likely out at least a month.
Enjoy the doubleheader.
