#31 The Top Waiver Adds for Week 5

Posted on

Coming off a MNF doubleheader, a coach/GM firing, and a fast-approaching waiver wire deadline, we can’t waste any time. Let’s get to it...

  1. Justin Jackson (RB) (8.8%) - We led the Week 3 edition of this newsletter with Joshua Kelley and definitely add him if he’s available, but Justin Jackson should see plenty of work with Austin Ekeler out (estimated 4-6 weeks). Like Kelley and Ekeler, Jackson can do a little bit of everything. I’d expect somewhere between 8-12 touches with upside for more if Kelley struggles or gets injured.

  2. Robert Tonyan (TE) (7.9%) - Robert Tonyan, a man whose name sounds like it was made from a romance novel generator, caught all six of his targets for 98 yards and 3 TDs. He has 5 TDs in four games this season, which happens to be the same number of TDs Jimmy Graham had in 32 games with the Packers. The TE landscape is gross right now and Tonyan is tethered to a red-hot Aaron Rodgers.

  3. Laviska Shenault Jr. (WR) (27.8%) - I was going to try to make it one newsletter without mentioning Shenault, but then Field Yates included him in his waiver column and I felt like I had permission. Via Field: 86 receiving yards in Week 4, creative usage, and a high floor with double-digit scoring in 3 of four games.

  4. Damien Harris (RB) (15.4%) - Damien Harris emerged from IR as the lead back in the Patriots offense rushing for 100 yards in the Sony Michel role (who will miss at least 3 games on IR). He’ll lose some touches to Rex Burkhead and pass work to James White, but he should soak up most of the early down work and goal line carries. He’s more appealing in standard scoring than PPR.

  5. D’Ernest Johnson (RB) (0.0%) - You can’t say D’Ernest isn’t available in *your* league. I have concrete proof. Kareem Hunt is going to smash while Chubb is out (estimated 6 weeks), but we know this backfield can support two RBs for fantasy. Johnson had 13 carries for 95 yards and is a solid speculative stash even if you don’t start him right away.

Honorable Mentions: Ke’Shawn Vaughn, Tre’Quan Smith, Teddy Bridgewater

Brian Hoyer was terrible. So was Jarret Stidham...N’Keal Harry scored a TD moments after my wife told me he sucked...The Patriots defense kept the Chiefs in check but the KC studs still performed well...Aaron Jones touched the ball 20 times and scored, but Jamaal Williams was far too involved (16 touches) for the members of the #FreeAaronJones movement...Todd Gurley still isn’t catching passes (1 target), but he found his way into the endzone twice...Matt Ryan threw for 0 TDs, Calvin Ridley had 0 catches, and Julio Jones left the game with 1 aggravated hammy.

The Texans fired coach and GM Bill O’Brien. It’s hard to defend either the GM Bill O’Brien (traded away DeAndre Hopkins for David Johnson & a 2nd round pick) or the coach Bill O’Brien (0-4 record with one of the best QBs in the league).

Matthew is on fire with his longshot picks on Fantasy Football Now. Tune in this week for his Week 5 special...Austin Ekeler is expected to miss 4-6 weeks...Nick Chubb was officially placed on IR and is expected to miss 6 weeks...Cam Newton is currently asymptomatic since testing for COVID-19 on Saturday...Chris Godwin, Scotty Miller, Mike Evans and Leonard Fournette DNP on Monday...Sam Darnold wants to play Week 5 after he sprained his AC joint...Brian Flores says he hasn’t decided on a starting QB for Week 5. Is it Tua time?...Jimmy Garoppolo’s status for Week 5 is still uncertain.
