Kent State (+10) vs. Akron
7 p.m. ET Tuesday
The one I had a lean on yesterday — and I probably wouldn't play it anymore — was Akron opening as a double-digit favorite over Kent State. I thought long and hard about adding that to the portfolio but didn't quite pull the trigger.
I wanted to handicap that one a little bit more today, and the line has indeed dropped now into the single digits, which doesn't make it a play for me. My line in that game is Akron -8.5. I think at +10 you could consider firing on Kent State.
Now, Kent State is the worst team in the FBS, but keep in mind the opponent here — Akron is maybe the fourth- or fifth-worst team in the FBS. With Akron going on the road here, this is a shot for Kent State to bag a win or at least make it competitive. That Kent State coaching staff is very much on the hot seat, and Kenni Burns will probably get one more year but they have shown absolutely nothing.
Again, this is your shot to get a conference win, so I'd expect a decent effort. And if it is at +10, I think you'd go that direction.
Eastern Michigan (-2.5) vs. Buffalo
7 p.m. ET Wednesday
Eastern Michigan is hosting Buffalo on Wednesday. The line in the market is Eastern Michigan -2.5 right now, and I have Eastern Michigan -1.4. Last week, Eastern Michigan was a lean of mine against Ohio and that was my miss. I hit on the other two.
But Eastern Michigan would probably be my lean there. I have a hard time doubting Chris Creighton. I love Chris Creighton, but we're pretty close to the margins there.
Toledo (-2.5) vs. Ohio
7 p.m. ET Wednesday
This is the most bettable at the current number, and it's also the biggest game. Toledo is a 2.5-point favorite, but my line is Toledo -4.8.
Again, I tried to fade them to ill effect last week, but I'm going to do it again here. Toledo, I think, is the more talented team. They're also the team that can be more multiple, and I think they can address Ohio's rushing offense enough to greatly hinder that offense in general.
Toledo has more playmakers with athleticism — I'm going to take Toledo if that line's under a field goal.
Miami (OH) (-2.5) vs. Northern Illinois
8 p.m. ET Tuesday
My line in this game is Miami -5.5. But when I got into the matchup, I think Northern Illinois matches up — they have a really good pass defense, and Miami of Ohio, they just do the quick-hitting passes to get the ball into space. Against some of these bad MAC teams like Akron or Kent State or Ball State, you can get chunk yardage off them, or at least guarantee efficiency. But against a team with a really, really, really good pass defense like NIU, it's not quite as viable.
And the other thing is, Miami of Ohio has a solid run defense, but it's not elite. And NIU's weak spot is their offense, but they like to run. I don't think Miami can completely take that away. So I'm showing a little bit of line value on Miami of Ohio, but because of the on-field matchup it's not a huge lean for me.
