New York Mets vs. New York Yankees

The Subway Series will take place at Yankees stadium on Tuesday night. This is a crucial series for both of these teams as we approach the trade deadline.

The question is will these teams be buyers or sellers at the deadline?

The Mets came into the season with a lot of hype after being aggressive in the free agency market, most notably signing reigning Cy Young Award Winner Justin Verlander

Verlander has been one of the best arms in baseball over the last decade-plus, but he has struggled to find his form this season. Verlander enters play, supporting an ERA of 3.47 and a record of 4-5.

Fellow veteran Max Scherzer has experienced struggles of his own. Similar to Verlander, Scherzer has been one of the best arms in baseball over the last ten years. Scherzer has an ERA of 4.20 which is the second highest in his sixteen-year career.

The offense for the Mets has been disappointing all season long. The Mets rank 18th in runs per game (4.42). On paper, this lineup has multiple stars, but they have collectively underperformed.

  • Pete Alonso is one of those stars that has underperformed. Alonso got off to a scorching hot start but has since struggled.
    • The Polar Bear is hitting just .212 on the season and just .168 since June 1st. Alonso has just six home runs during that span.
  • Fransico Lindor was added via a trade three years ago. At the time of the trade, it looked like a great move for the Mets, but Lindor has yet to live up to the hype as a Met.

Justin Verlander will toe the rubber tonight for the Mets as he looks for his fifth win of the season.

The New York Yankees will enter play two games back of the final wildcard spot and tied for last in the AL East with the Boston Red Sox.

Similar to the Mets, the Yankees began the season with aspirations of winning the World Series. They will have to battle just to find their way into the postseason.

Aaron Judge turned in a historic 2022 season, blasting sixty-two home runs and winning American League MVP. Judge remains on the DL as he has not played since June 3rd.

The Yankees record since June 3rd is 19-22. It is clear how important Judge is to the success of this Yankees team.

Outside of Aaron Judge, the Yankees do not have a player that is batting over .265. Glyber Torres represents the second-best average on the Yankees as he is batting .263.

The Yankees only have four players on their roster that are batting .250 or better.

The numbers tell the story of why the Yankees have performed so poorly this season.

Overall, New York ranks 19th in baseball averaging 4.40 runs per game.

You may be wondering how this team is over .500. Well, the answer to that is their Pitching. Overall the Yankees rank 8th in baseball with an ERA of 3.87.

The Yankees represent the best bullpen in baseball which supports an ERA of 3.21.

The Yankees will send Dominican-born right-hander Domingo German to the mound tonight. German is 5-6 on the year with an ERA of 4.52.

Pick: New York Mets F5 ML (-135, DraftKings

Justin Verlander supports some terrific lifetime numbers vs. this current Yankees lineup. In one hundred and eleven at-bats, the Yankees hit just .207 vs Verlander.

The only player who has ten or more at-bats and is hitting over .231 vs. Verlander is the former batting champion, Dj Lemahieu.

Lemahieu is having the worst year of his career, hitting just .233 on the campaign. However, Dj will bring a four-game hitting streak into play.

Verlander has held down the other stars for New York, as you can see below.

  • Giancarlo Stanton is 3-20 (.150) 2 HR
  • Anthony Rizzo 0-5 (.000) 2 BB
  • Gleyber Torres 4-24 (.167)

Domingo German has had a rough season outside of his perfect game. German is 2-4 at Yankees stadium with an ERA of 4.04.

This current Mets team is batting .233 with an OBP of .312 vs. German in seventy-lifetime at-bats.

Chicago Cubs vs. Chicago White Sox

The Chicago Cubs will travel to the southside on Tuesday night for game one of the Crosstown series. The White Sox lead the all-time series 73-65.

Both of these teams are on the outside looking in on the playoffs. The Cubs, however, enter play winners of three in a row.

The recent Cubs surge poses the question of what they do at the trade deadline. A week ago, it appeared that the Cubs would clearly be sellers, but now they are just 6.5 games out of first place in the Central.

Cody Bellinger has enjoyed a terrific season. Bellinger is batting .319 on the season, paired with fourteen home runs.

Bellinger is rumored to be on the move if the Cubs do decide to be sellers. The Cubs would likely require a strong package in return for the former all-star.

  • Nico Hoerner has delivered a strong season for the Cubs. Hoerner is batting .273 on the season with a team-high one hundred and five hits.
  • Patrick Wisdom has been the best power source for the Cubs. Wisdom leads the club in home runs with seventeen.
  • Kyle Hendricks will toe the rubber for the Cubs tonight. The Professor, as he is nicknamed, has delivered a strong season.

The White Sox enter play supporting a record of 41-60. It has been an ugly season for the White Sox, who may look to sell next week at the trade deadline.

It has been a tough go of things for the White Sox over the last two seasons. On paper, this is a talented roster, but over the last two years, that talent has yet to translate to the field.

Chicago is twelve games behind the Twins in the Central, and they are quickly running out of time. The Sox have been ice cold as of late, as they have lost three in a row and seven of their last ten.

The Sox have played their best baseball at home this year as they are four games under .500 in Chicago compared to fifteen games under .500 on the road.

Luis Robert Jr has been the star of this White Sox lineup. Robert Jr leads the team with twenty-six home runs and fifty-seven runs batted in.

Overall the White Sox rank 23rd in baseball as they average just 4.19 runs per game. The Pitching has not been much better, as they rank 25th with an ERA of 4.61.

Pick: Chicago White Sox ML (-105, DraftKings)

The line here may confuse some people as the White Sox enter play ice cold and are the favorites as they face a hot Cubs team.

The numbers would suggest that this line is accurate and that the Sox hold the advantage entering this game.

Starting pitcher Michael Kopech represents strong numbers vs this Cubs lineup. The Cubs are batting just .095 in twenty-one at-bats.

The only player in this Cubs lineup that has a hit vs. Kopech is Yan Gomes (1-2). The rest of the Cubs batters are 0-20.

Kopech has pitched his best baseball at home this season, as he has an ERA of 4.07 at home compared to 4.53 on the road.

Kyle Hendricks has a lifetime ERA of 2.57 vs. this current White Sox lineup. The sample size is fairly large as the Sox have seventy-four combined at-bats.

Some of the White Sox's best hitters have enjoyed success, as you can see in the numbers below.

The numbers suggest that the Sox will continue their success tonight vs Hendricks.
