2025 Fantasy Football Offseason News: Catch Puka Nacua While You Can
Kendall Valenzuela is back to tackle some of the most pressing recent NFL news that has a direct impact on fantasy football.
Are the Steelers and a certain quarterback headed for an arranged marriage? How are the Giants going to make it work with a proposed two-headed monster at the quarterback position? And a young star at WR is already looking toward the end game?
Here are some 2025 offseason NFL headlines and how they impact the fantasy football community.
Just a reminder: the Steelers have no quarterback right now
With more quarterback dominos falling this past week, I think now is a good time to remind everyone that *technically* Mason Rudolph is the Steelers' 2025 QB1 … because they have no one else on the roster! Now here's the thing, Mike Tomlin is a damn good coach — he took over in 2007 and has 18 consecutive seasons without a losing campaign. I don't doubt that we will look back at this article and laugh after he makes it 19 consecutive seasons, but the quarterback room is somewhat worrying.
According to multiple reports, Aaron Rodgers had an hours-long meeting in the Steelers' practice facility with Tomlin, general manager Omar Khan, team owner and president Art Rooney II and some other coaches. However, he left without a deal. The Giants were supposedly mulling over the decision to sign Rodgers, but decided to get ahead of things and go with Russell Wilson instead. Could it be because they didn't want to take the time to wait? It feels like there's really two options for the Steelers right now: Sign Rodgers or draft a rookie quarterback. Rodgers could also be thinking about retirement or toying with the idea that if he waits long enough a team will call him closer to training camp, but who knows?
Adding a quarterback in the draft could get somewhat tricky for the Steelers. They currently hold the 21st pick which is entirely too far away to land a top prospect. There are two "elite" quarterbacks in this class—Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders. In Thor Nystrom's latest mock draft he has the Titans taking Ward with the first-overall pick and the Browns taking Sanders directly after. The Steelers would have to put together a huge blockbuster trade to jump into the top 3, but we've seen crazier things happen. They could also wait and get a Jaxson Dart or Jalen Milroe, both would be cheaper options—in draft capital—than the other two rookie quarterbacks.
Either way, it feels like a little bit of panic is warranted, but this is Tomlin after all, and he deserves some credit and trust throughout the process. Now we just wait and see.
Maybe two Giants QBs are better than one?
Speaking of the Giants … is the quarterback duo of Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson better than just having one? We're about to find out! For a brief moment fantasy managers were rejoicing that Winston would be QB1 in New York, but that was short lived and now we have Wilson in the mix. One thing is for sure, this team needs to be on Hard Knocks or at least give us behind-the-scenes access into the locker room, because I NEED to hear those pregame speeches between these two.
Alright, back to fantasy. Malik Nabers gets out of this unscathed. He was able to put up huge fantasy days and finished the season with 109 catches, 1,204 yards and 7 touchdowns in 15 games. Oh, and he was able to do that with the rotating cast of Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, Tommy DeVito, and Tim Boyle.
Compared to that group it feels like Wilson and Winston are upgrades. You're still going to be drafting Nabers as a WR1 because he is so talented and feels like he could be quarterback-proof. Unless you are in the deepest of leagues you're also not drafting Winston or Wilson (best ball and superflex are a little different). Head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen's seats are already hot and training camp hasn't even started. They are desperate to win coming off a year where they were the NFC's second-worst team in total point differential. It looks like it will be Wilson as QB1 based on the contracts, but whoever it is let's just feed Nabers. Please. We're begging.
Puka Nacua wants to retire WHEN?!
Fear not, fantasy managers, we still get six more seasons of Puka Nacua before he retires! As a guest on the Join the Lobby podcast, he told listeners his (way-too-early) retirement plans …
“I know I want to retire at the age of 30. I'm going into Year 3 — it wouldn't even be 10 years. It'd be maybe seven or eight. I think of Aaron Donald, to go out at the top, I think it would be super cool.”
Donald retired in 2024 after 10 seasons in the NFL and took with him an incredible resume: three-time Defensive Player of the Year and a Super Bowl champion are just a few. If Nacua wants to let the world know we may not get him past age 30 then so be it! It feels like we've seen these discussions pop up a bit more in recent years. Remember when Tyreek Hill said that he was going to finish his contract with the Dolphins and then call it quits?
Anyways, seven or eight years with Nacua is just fine with me. This season the Rams look primed for another Super Bowl, push with not only Matthew Stafford, but his new weapon in Davante Adams. This had to be one of the better landing spots he could have gone to, but don't count Nacua out. He was the WR6 in PPR points per game over the past two seasons for a reason, and while his target share may drop and the WR1 overall dreams could be a little harder to reach he is still THAT GUY.
Let's just enjoy his fantasy goodness while we can.
