Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Week 9: Cedric Tillman, Bo Nix and More!
Maybe we should have National Tight Ends Day every single week? Heck, can we get a National Wide Receiver, Running Back, Quarterback day… PLEASE?!! Solely to help our fantasy teams, of course.
Week 8 was loaded with drama – it had to be one of the best Witching Hours in the history of Red Zone. Unfortunately, we couldn't leave the week without some serious injuries to key fantasy pieces.
Before we dive into the fun, I want to point you in the direction of our waiver wire tool, which is an awesome way to visualize what I have below AND take advantage of some “wisdom of the crowd”-ing, as you can drop your FAAB bids in and see what other people are thinking of spending:
Below are the waiver wire recommendations, in order of priority and always under 40% rostered. We have two teams on a bye in Week 9 — the San Francisco 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers. Good luck!
Injury Roundup
- Packers: Jordan Love (groin)
- Patriots: Drake Maye (concussion)
- Texans: Stefon Diggs (knee)
- Jaguars: Christian Kirk (out for season), BrIan Thomas Jr. (chest), Gabe Davis (shoulder)
- Buccaneers: Sterling Shepard (hamstring)
- 49ers: Jordan Mason (shoulder), Deebo Samuel (ribs)

FANTASY FOOTBALL WAIVER WIRE ADDS FOR WEEK 9
Jameis Winston, QB, Browns (6% rostered)
Well, hello Jameis Winston! The Browns lost Deshaun Watson for the season, but it was obvious on Sunday that Winston elevated this team to another level. The Browns scored a season-high 29 points behind Winston's three touchdown passes and 334 yards.
Watson hadn’t reached 200 passing yards in a game all season, but with Winston at quarterback the offense felt energized — and plenty of offensive weapons got in on the fun (keep reading). The ceiling is always there with Jameis for a 300-yard passing game every week and that's something they didn't have with Watson — and why we have to upgrade this offense. The Browns take on the Chargers before their bye in Week 10. Scoop up Jameis if you need quarterback help heading into this week.
Cedric Tillman, WR, Browns (19% rostered)
Remember when we talked about Jameis Winston putting all his receivers on the map? Cedric Tillman is toward the top of that list. He had a 22% target share and should be looked at as a high-end WR3 with Winston as his quarterback. He finished Sunday with seven receptions for 99 yards and two touchdowns, which gave fantasy managers 28.9 points (enjoy that win!).
Tillman has posted 16.1 and 28.9 fantasy points in the last two games without Amari Cooper and has an 8.9 Utilization Score. He is now second on the team in route participation (87%) and targets (24%). If you read all the way to the bottom, you saw Tillman on the waiver report last week, but now he is THE add heading into Week 9.
Bo Nix, QB, Broncos (25% rostered)
Bo Nix had the best game of his young career on Sunday (insert joke here about starting everyone against the Panthers). He finished with a season-high 29.7 fantasy points off of 28 completions for 284 yards and three touchdowns. What makes Nix even better for fantasy is his rushing ability. Over the last four weeks, he has 29 carries for 149 yards and two touchdowns!
With bye weeks resuming, Nix should be rostered, as Denver's schedule is favorable the rest of the way. The Broncos take on the Ravens in Week 9, and, according to PFF, they have allowed the third-most fantasy points to quarterbacks over the first seven weeks. Go get him!
Elijah Moore, WR, Browns (1% rostered)
Yeah, I can't believe we are here either. SHOUT OUT Jameis Winston, BABY! Elijah Moore came to life with the quarterback change and scored 16.5 fantasy points and finished Week 8 with a Utilization Score of 8.6!
I am going to be more cautious with my approach on Moore, just because Tillman and David Njkou will be the biggest beneficiaries with Winston under center. In Dwain McFarland's Utilization Report, he highlights Moore as a high-end WR4 with an opportunity to reach WR3 status. He is widely available across all leagues.
Parker Washington, WR, Jaguars (1% rostered)
The Jaguars are down bad right now. Not only did they lose Christian Kirk for the season with a broken collarbone, but Gabe Davis left the game with a shoulder injury and the team will also be without rookie BrIan Thomas Jr. for 2-4 weeks with a rib injury. Trevor Lawrence will really rely on Evan Engram, but Parker Washington is the next man up in this offense and could be a deep FLEX play depending on your league.
The Jaguars take on the Eagles, Vikings and Lions in their next three games — we'll have to see how this offense operates without their top three wide receivers (yikes).
Michael Wilson, WR, Cardinals (12.5% rostered)
The Arizona Cardinals gave us some fantasy points on Sunday and Michael Wilson entered the fray. He had five receptions for 31 yards and a touchdown, which turned into 14.1 fantasy points. Plenty of fantasy players are out on Kyler Murray, but I'm not — and if he can continue to get better each week then Wilson will continue popping up on the waiver wire as a viable option. This is a solid receiver who should not be this available.
Quentin Johnston, WR, Chargers (15% rostered)
We always want to be one step ahead on the waiver wire, and this add falls right into that category. Quentin Johnston has been sidelined since suffering an ankle injury in Week 6 against the Broncos. Before his injury we saw glimpses of life in the fantasy box scores, especially in Weeks 2 and 3, where he scored 22.1 and 12.1 points, respectively.
The Chargers are also changing their ways a little bit — not being as run-heavy and letting Justin Herbert pass more (he's had over 31 attempts in the last three games). Ladd McConkey walked away with a huge fantasy outing in Week 8, but Johnston could be sneaky when he's able to return.
Malik Willis, QB, Packers (1% rostered)
Jordan Love left Sunday's game with a groin injury and his status for Week 9 is in doubt. The good news is that we have seen Malik Willis before — and he actually does hold a little value if you are in a pinch at quarterback.
Willis entered the game in the third quarter and completed four passes for 56 yards and a touchdown while also rushing four times for 23 yards. In the two starts this season, he logged three touchdowns vs. zero interceptions, but — even more important for fantasy — 41 and 73 rushing yards. The Packers take on the Lions, which is not an easy task, but Willis is definitely a QB you should consider.
Braelon Allen, RB, Jets (37% rostered)
We've talked about stashing Braelon Allen here before, but it's time to highlight him again. Allen had 43% of the rushing attempts in Week 8. It's really hard to predict what coaches are going to do, but Allen has been solid this season. We never want injuries, but if Breece Hall were to go down then it is obvious that Allen would take over a big workload. Stash Allen if you have room.
Sterling Shepard (13% rostered) / Trey Palmer (4% rostered), WRs, Buccaneers
While Trey Palmer only had two receptions for 29 yards and 4.9 fantasy points, the Buccaneers are really thin at receiver. Not only did they lose Chris Godwin for the season and are without an injured Mike Evans, but Sterling Shepard left the game for a little bit with a hamstring injury before coming back.
Palmer had a 78% route participation and Shepard had a 74% route participation (60% from the slot). Tight end Cade Otton and Jalen McMillan feel like the players who are going to benefit the most from the Bus' injuries, but we've seen target shares bounce around before and it's worth holding onto or picking up Shepard and/or Palmer.
Noah Brown, WR, Commanders (1% rostered)
Jayden Daniels was the man of the hour, but let's not forget who was at the right place at the absolute right time: Noah Brown. We've highlighted him in this article before, and the feelings remain the same — he is a great stash play. When we look at the utilization over the last three weeks, Brown's route participation has only gotten better. This is purely a stash play, but someone your leaguemates could be jealous of in the coming weeks:
Xavier Legette (15% rostered) / Jalen Coker, (1% rostered) WR, Panthers
The Carolina Panthers were without Diontae Johnson due to a concussion and the player who stepped up into a bigger role was Jalen Coker. We knew that someone would emerge between Coker, Xavier Legette, David Moore and Jonathan Mingo — but Coker came away with 17.8 fantasy points on four receptions for 78 yards and one touchdown.
Coker had 68 receiving yards against the Bears in Week 5, but that was the only time he had exceeded 30 receiving yards this season. No, the Panthers are not a sexy team to recommend on the waiver wire and things could change if the Panthers are able to get Andy Dalton back in Week 9, but Coker showed he could be a reliable target if Johnson were to miss more time.
I wanted to include Legette here because he had 13.4 fantasy points in Week 8 and there have been rumors that Johnson and Adam Thielen could be on the move before the trade deadline. If that happens, then both Coker and Legette will have bigger roles moving forward, making them somewhat startable if you're desperate during a heavy bye week.
Isaac Guerendo, RB, 49ers (8% rostered)
Jordan Mason went down with a shoulder injury against the Cowboys on Sunday night, but picking up Isaac Guerendo is still purely a stash play. The 49ers are on a bye in Week 9 and it has been reported that Christian McCaffrey is on track to return to the team in Week 10. We never want injuries, but if anything were to happen with McCaffrey's return (and if Mason isn't available) then Guerendo would get a ton of work.
Trade Deadline Fliers
SURPRISE! The NFL's trade deadline is a week away (November 5th) and these are a few players who have been mentioned in trade conversations over the past few weeks. If they were to move to better offenses then maybe they could give us a little fantasy goodness. If you have room then add them, but they are absolutely not a priority.
Darius Slayton, WR, Giants (13% rostered)
We have already seen a busy wide receiver trade market this season with DeAndre Hopkins, Amari Cooper and Davante Adams joining new teams. The Giants need to keep their future in mind and should think of moving away from some pieces, including Darius Slayton.
We've seen him be productive this season — when Malik Nabers was sidelined in Week 5 he had eight catches for 122 yards and one touchdown. On Monday night he eclipsed 100 yards again (with Nabers in the game!). He's not a particularly sexy name but if he goes to the right team then maybe there could be some fun fantasy implications. Plus he'd only be a $1.8 million cap hit for an acquiring team. Just saying!
Other potential Trade Deadline Targets worth taking a flier on:
- Khalil Herbert, RB, Bears (4% rostered)
- Miles Sanders, RB, Panthers (8% rostered)
- Alexander Mattison, RB, Raiders (60% rostered)
