Only a few days after trading away their quarterback, the Seattle Seahawks have found a replacement, as they've signed Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100M deal, as reported by Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapaport.

What does this mean for Darnold, his fantasy football prospects, and the rest of the Seattle offense? Ian Hartitz dives in.

Sam Darnold Signs With Seattle Seahawks

The best available QB in free agency has a new home: Sam Darnold is heading to the Seahawks on a three-year, $100.5 million deal that includes $55 million guaranteed. The deal puts Darnold ($33.5 million per year) just behind the likes of Matthew Stafford ($40 million) and Derek Carr ($37.5 million) in terms of annual dollars, but ahead of fellow revitalized former "bust" Baker Mayfield ($33.3 million).

While all those dollar amounts sound like a lot for QBs who won't exactly be confused as top-five players anytime soon, that's the going rate for very good QB play in the year 2025. It remains to be seen if Darnold will be able to replicate his 2024 magic in a new environment, but make no mistake about it: The man was pretty, pretty, pretty great during his one-year campaign in Minnesota.

Darnold among 31 QBs with 300-plus dropbacks in 2024:

  • EPA per dropback: +0.127 (No. 14)
  • Completion percentage over expected: +3.9% (No. 7)
  • Yards per attempt: 7.9 (No. 6)
  • Passer rating: 102.5 (No. 6)
  • PFF pass grade: 80.3 (No. 9)

Yes, the last two games were a little f*cked up. Also yes, Darnold only turns 28 in June, and last year was more or less the first time we actually got to see an extended view of him inside of a halfway decent offensive environment.

Fantasy Football Impact on Seahawks, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and More

Give the much-maligned former No. 3 overall pick credit for helping engineer one of the league's most efficient passing attacks during the first 17 weeks of the season.

One little problem: Darnold's offense is hardly guaranteed to be as QB-friendly in 2024 as it was 2025. Last year's Vikings offense was superior to the Seahawks when it came to Supporting Cast Rating, and that was before Seattle shipped DK Metcalf to Pittsburgh and released Tyler Lockett. Throw in PFF's reigning 31st-ranked offensive line, and it's fair to say this Seahawks offensive environment might be a bit closer to what Darnold saw during his years in New York as opposed to his time with Kevin O'Connell and company.

Now, new Seahawks OC Klint Kubiak did indeed get some good moments out of Derek Carr (particularly before the Saints suffered so many o-line and WR injuries), but it's tough to say that his X's and O's will be able to fully overcome the potential disadvantage with their Jimmy's and Joe's.

The reigning QB9 in fantasy points per game (18.1), Darnold is someone who has proven capable of supplying QB1-level goodness across an entire season. Still, the potential for defensive-minded head coach Mike MacDonald to embrace the run, combined with such little offensive firepower outside of Jaxon Smith-Njigba, makes it tough to shoot the veteran too high up in the ranks. Something in the QB20 range alongside fellow pocket-passers in meh offenses like C.J. StroudTrevor Lawrence, and Tua Tagovailoa feels about right.

As for JSN? The rising third-year talent has a very real shot to lead the NFL in targets. While something close to a high-end addition at WR via free agency or (more likely) the draft would make sense, it's reasonable to believe whoever the Seahawks bring in won't be quite as ready as Metcalf to overly challenge Smith-Njigba for targets.

This reality makes it tough to get the stud slot maven outside the position's top 12 options: JSN is firmly in the low-end WR1 conversation next to fellow WR1 ballers like Drake LondonA.J. BrownGarrett Wilson, and Ladd McConkey. As we saw with Justin Jefferson and (to a lesser extent) Jordan Addison last season, Darnold is more than capable of enabling some fantasy goodness with his WRs.

Seahawks fans, rejoice! Kind of. Probably not. But hey, at least Darnold is significantly younger than Smith, and seemingly the QB Kubiak and company prefer. Good luck!
