Week 5 Fantasy Football Rankings And Tiers. Josh Jacobs Looms.
It is time to make those tough lineup decisions for Week 5 of the fantasy football season.
Below, you’ll find positional rankings, player analysis, team totals and spreads for every game on the slate.
Note: Players are now tiered across all positions (RB, WR and TE) to help with flex decisions in larger formats. Because of this, TEs might not have a player deserving of Tier 1 compared to RBs and WRs.

Tier 5 – Matthew Stafford
Stafford ranks No. 2 in the NFL in passing yards with 1,229, which only trails my No. 5 QB in the Week 5 ranks — Tua Tagovialoa. Eventually, more TD passes will come for the Rams’ signal caller, and the levy could break in Week 5 if Cooper Kupp returns to the lineup.
The Rams are a pass-first unit in 2023, as indicated by their +5% dropback rate over expected (DBOE).
So this hasn’t just been a game script thing — this is a pass-heavy team in 2023. Stafford leads the NFL, averaging 46 dropbacks per game.
When you look at the makeup of the Rams team, the approach makes sense. They like their receiving weapons and don’t have a backfield capable of handling a heavy workload between the tackles. Kyren Williams is best utilized when involved in the passing attack.
The matchup with the Eagles offers the second-highest game total on the slate, and the Rams’ 23-point team total is respectable. Philadelphia hasn’t been as strong against the pass in 2023, allowing 279 yards (third-most) and 2.3 TDs (fourth-most) per game.
Stafford is a top-12 QB in Week 5. He is an excellent streaming option if you face a bye-week dilemma. The veteran QB is available in almost half of leagues.

Tier 2 – Josh Jacobs
The first three weeks of the season were brutal for Jacobs’ managers. However, that all changed in Week 4 when he erupted for 28 points against the Chargers.
Jacobs is another example of why we must remain patient and keep RBs with full-time roles in our lineups. Based on data since the 2011 season, backs with Jacobs’ utilization finished as the RB7 on average.
The 25-year-old bruiser has 22 or more opportunities in three of four contests when adding rushing attempts and targets.
Jacobs is on pace for a career-high 102 targets in a Raiders attack that doesn’t use three WRs often and doesn’t throw to their TEs. The fifth-year back is gobbling up the underneath targets that used to go to Darren Waller and Hunter Renfrow.
Honestly, we need to thank the heavens for the targets because Jacobs has been downright terrible in every efficiency metric known to man.
- 10-plus yard attempts: 1.6% (35 of 35 backs with at least 30 attempts)
- Average yards after contact: 2.0 (34th)
- Missed tackles forced per attempt: 12.9% (28th)
Catching passes in PPR formats is one helluva drug, and Jacobs ranks second in targets per route run (TPRR) at 32% and first in yards per route run (YPRR) at 2.28.
We must remember that efficiency can be a fickle thing, and if Jacobs can get his 2022 mojo back, he will be an absolute fantasy force. That is where the Packers enter the picture.
The Raiders’ Week 5 opponents allow the third-most yards (155) and TDs (1.25) on the ground per game (155.3). Opposing rushing attacks have averaged 23 fantasy points per game.
Look for Jacobs to push for 25 touches, 125 total yards and a TD. He is a top-10 player overall in Week 5.
Tier 3 – Raheem Mostert
All of the hype over the last two weeks deservedly sits with De’Von Achane in this backfield. However, Mostert is only one week removed from a 45-point outburst and is the RB2 overall.
Achane is edging Mostert out for snaps and might be the No. 1 moving forward, but their attempts and targets remain close. Achane saw 12 in Week 4, and Mostert registered 11.
From an efficiency point of view, Achane has been outlier-good, but Mostert has played exceptionally well. He has been one of the best backs in the NFL.
- 10-plus yard attempts: 16.7% (3 of 35 backs with at least 30 attempts)
- Average yards after contact: 3.1 (14 of 35)
- Missed tackles forced per attempt: 29.2% (3 of 35)
- PFF run grade: 84.6 (2 of 35)
Of course, Mostert has also been effective in the passing attack. The Dolphins don’t use much 11 personnel, which leaves the Miami RB as the third passing option on many plays — fullback Alec Ingold and tight end Durham Smythe aren’t much competition for targets. Mostert’s 1.34 YPRR ranks fourth out of 26 backs with at least 50 routes.
Now, the Dolphins land a great matchup against the Giants, who have struggled to limit opposing rushing attacks, allowing 134 yards and 1.5 TDs per game. No other team has a higher team total than the Dolphins’ 29.75.
The reality is most backfields are split situations, and Mostert resides on one of the most productive offenses in the NFL. He also still possesses that score-from-anywhere speed, as we saw when he hit 21.6 MPH on his 43-yard rushing TD in Week 2 — the third-fastest time recorded in 2023.
Mostert is a top-25 overall play in Week 5 that belongs ahead of all other RBs playing in committees outside his rookie teammate.
Tier 3 – Breece Hall
The Jets backfield remains a committee, but Hall has taken over the top role over the last two games.
Fantasy managers are now hoping the second-year back can take another step forward after Robert Saleh told the media he is no longer on a snap restriction. The coach noted they have multiple guys they want to get involved.
While that sounds good in theory, Dalvin Cook appears to be running on fumes, and the Jets offense needs any edge it can find. Hall has been the much better option so far in 2023.
Hall’s outlook for the remainder of the season might hinge on how competitive the Jets are, but right now the season is young enough to turn things around. If New York ever had a week to make their stand and let the second-year RB eat, it is Week 5 against the Broncos.
It is hard to quantify how bad Denver’s defense has been over the first four weeks. They allow more yards (175) and TDs (1.75) per game rushing than Dallas allows passing (171 and 0.5).
Thanks to the committee, I can’t label Hall as a smash play, BUT he gets an enormous UPGRADE and comes in as my RB20 for Week 5. He should be in most lineups.

Tier 3 – Garrett Wilson
Since the Aaron Rodgers injury, I have been well below industry consensus each week on Wilson. However, multiple positive data points work in Wilson’s favor, making his Week 5 outlook more optimistic.
First, the Jets showed a willingness to pass the ball more in Week 4 against the Chiefs — posting their first positive dropback rate over expectation of the season at +6%.
That tweak to the game plan allowed the Jets to reach a season-high 42 dropbacks, and the second-year WR garnered a whopping 13 targets.
That leads me to point No. 2: Wilson is a TARGET HOG. His target share has reached 29% or higher in every game, and he ranks No. 6 in the NFL at 31%.
The third big break in his favor is his catchable target rate. After a horrific 43% outing in the first game with Zach Wilson under center, things have improved to 63% and 77%.
While the milf hunter still ranks in the bottom four in completion rate at 59%, he and his top target are showing signs of chemistry. There is a good chance this is short-lived — it is hard for a WR to keep a catch rate this high with this QB play.
However, if that mojo can last one more week, the outcome could be a high-end WR1 finish because the Jets play against Denver. Even without the other three positives working in his favor, Wilson will climb up most rankings on this matchup alone.
The Broncos' secondary is outlier bad with a 35.9 PFF coverage grade, and the team also ranks dead last in tackling (28.6). No other unit gives up more passing yards (302) and TDs (3.3) per game.
If Wilson gets seven to eight catchable targets, he has a shot at 100-plus yards and a score. He UPGRADES out of WR3 purgatory to WR19 in Week 5.
Tier 4 – Zay Flowers
Flowers is a clear-cut top-two option in Baltimore’s passing attack along with Mark Andrews.
He is having a great rookie campaign — only Puka Nacua has a better target share and air yards share.
Flowers rarely leaves the field, leads all rookies in route participation at 95%, and is third in points per game behind Nacua and Tank Dell.
The Ravens offense hasn’t transformed into that aggressive pass-happy unit we hoped for under Todd Monken, but they have improved their pace over the last two games with a +0.21 plays per minute over expected (PPMOE).
While many might stay away from the Steelers and Ravens game this weekend thanks to a nasty game total of 38 points, the matchup is pretty ripe for Flowers. Pittsburgh allows 39.3 fantasy points per game to opposing pass catchers. They rank fifth-worst and fourth-worst in passing yards (273) and TDs (2) allowed per game.
Flowers UPGRADES to mid-range WR2 status in Week 5 as my WR20 overall.

Tier 5 – Jake Ferguson
Reminder: I have leveled my tiers across RB, WR and TE to help with flex lineup decisions. Travis Kelce is my highest-rated TE in Week 5, and he is in Tier 2 due to the change in process based on feedback (thanks!).
Ferguson has been a Utilization Report darling over the past two weeks — hopefully, you were able to snag him off your waiver wire. Over the first four weeks, the second-year TE trails only Travis Kelce in targets per route run (TPRR) per the Fantasylife Utilization Comparison tool.
The missing ingredient for Ferguson is route participation. He hasn’t eclipsed the 70% mark this season, but his trend points upward. If that ever happens, he will be a 20%-plus target share guy like everyone these Kelce, Ertz and LaPorta.
The Cowboys passing attack isn’t a sure thing after CeeDee Lamb. Michael Gallup profiles more like a WR5 in fantasy, and Brandin Cooks is off to a slow start due to injury, leaving the door open for Dallas to get one of Dak Prescott’s favorite weapons some more playing time.
The 49ers aren’t a great matchup, but they play the fourth-most zone coverage in the NFL. Based on historical zone coverage data, the TEs and RBs often see nice bumps thanks to all the underneath looks, which is where Ferguson operates.
Ferguson climbs further up my ranks each week and is my TE8 in Week 5.
